17-year-old found fatally shot on Birmingham street was Huffman High senior

Birmingham, AL – The community is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Adonnis Xavier Bishop McQueen, a senior at Huffman High School, who was found shot dead on Cheri Lane in east Birmingham. Birmingham police responded to a call about a person down at 9:11 p.m. on Saturday in the Roebuck area.

Upon arrival, officers discovered McQueen unresponsive in the roadway, confirming he had been shot. Tragically, he was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. Shell casings near McQueen suggest he was shot at the location where his life was tragically cut short.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated that it is too early to determine if McQueen was specifically targeted. The victim lived in close proximity to the crime scene, prompting multiple family members to rush to the area. Heart-wrenching scenes unfolded as McQueen’s mother received the devastating news from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Fitzgerald expressed the profound impact of witnessing a grieving mother, saying, “You never get used to seeing the family’s reactions. Tonight, to sit there and watch the Jefferson County coroner ask just simple questions to the mother and she just froze. It’s almost as if she knew that was going to be her baby.”

As the investigation unfolds, no arrests have been made. McQueen’s tragic death marks the 115th homicide in Birmingham this year. Among the total homicides in Jefferson County, which stands at 161, eight have been ruled justifiable and one involved an officer-involved shooting by an external law enforcement agency.

Community members are urged to come forward with any information that could assist the ongoing investigation. Birmingham homicide detectives can be reached at 205-254-1764, and anonymous tips can be provided to Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
