Hollywood actress Leah Remini has taken legal action against the Church of Scientology Los Angeles and its leader, David Miscavige, filing a lawsuit that alleges a sustained and organized campaign of harassment, intimidation, and defamation.
Church of Scientology Los Angeles Faces Legal Battle
The lawsuit, comprising 60 pages, was lodged in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, with Remini’s representatives revealing her demand for a trial by jury, along with unspecified compensatory and punitive damages. The suit additionally seeks an injunction to cease the “unlawful conduct” by the Church of Scientology Los Angeles. Remini, famous for her role in the CBS sitcom “The King of Queens,” asserts that she has endured over a decade of psychological torture, defamation, surveillance, and harassment under the Church of Scientology Los Angeles. In a news release shared on Substack, Remini stated, “For 17 years, Scientology and David Miscavige have subjected me to what I believe to be psychological torture, defamation, surveillance, harassment, and intimidation, significantly impacting my life and career.” She expressed her determination to be the last person targeted by the Church of Scientology Los Angeles.

The Church of Scientology Los Angeles has promptly denied the allegations, branding the lawsuit “ludicrous” and the claims “pure lunacy.” Remini, however, has persisted, emphasizing that her intention is to put an end to the church’s alleged misconduct. Remini’s decision to take legal action follows her departure from the Church of Scientology Los Angeles in 2013, after which she became a prominent critic, publishing a memoir titled “Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology,” and hosting the docuseries “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath” on A&E. The Church of Scientology Los Angeles, often linked with Hollywood celebrities, has faced heightened scrutiny over the years due to allegations of abuse and manipulation by former members. Remini’s docuseries, along with HBO’s 2015 documentary “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” based on Lawrence Wright’s book, have played a pivotal role in exposing the practices of the church. In response to the allegations, the church stated, “Now that Remini’s propaganda has been exposed, Remini has spun entirely out of control by filing a frivolous lawsuit attempting to stop free speech exposing her false propaganda.” The legal battle is poised to cast a spotlight on the Church of Scientology Los Angeles and its practices.
