Watches and Warnings as Coastal New England and Atlantic Canada Prepares for Hurricane Lee’s Impact
Hurricane and tropical storm watches have been issued for much of coastal New England, as Hurricane Lee poses a threat to the region and Atlantic Canada in the coming days. The National Hurricane Center has warned of possible hurricane conditions, heavy rainfall, and coastal flooding in eastern Maine on Saturday. Maine Governor Janet Mills has urged residents to exercise caution and take necessary precautions to stay safe as the storm approaches.
CNN reports that there is also a significant risk of “life-threatening storm surge flooding” in parts of southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and Nantucket on late Friday and Saturday. Hurricane watches have been issued from Stonington, Maine, up to the US-Canada border, as well as for parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Hurricane Lee’s Size and Power: A Category 2 Threat with Far-Reaching Consequences
According to CBS Evening News, Hurricane Lee is currently a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph and its massive size still poses a considerable threat. The storm’s hurricane-force winds extend up to 115 miles from the center, while tropical storm-force winds reach out up to 265 miles. Even as it weakens, its vast reach increases the likelihood of affecting coastal New England and the Atlantic Canadian region. Given the already waterlogged conditions, the combination of strong winds and additional rainfall raises concerns about widespread damage.
Experts emphasize Hurricane Lee’s expansive size, as it can potentially impact a larger area which will lead to more widespread damage. This situation highlights the need for residents in the affected regions to remain vigilant and prepared as Hurricane Lee approaches, with its impacts expected to be felt in coastal New England and Atlantic Canada in the coming days.
