Impact of Hurricane Lee on Northeastern USA and Atlantic Canada

Hurricane Lee is on a course to impact the Northeastern United States and Atlantic Canada, bringing potential hazards regardless of its final strength at landfall. USA Today reports that the storm is expected to bring dangerous rip currents at beaches and strong winds capable of causing damage to trees and power lines. There are also concerns about heavy rainfall exacerbating already wet conditions in some areas.

What makes Hurricane Lee particularly worrisome is its expansive size. It has a wide swath of tropical storm-force winds extending over 560 miles from its center. The exact landfall location remains uncertain, with a significant margin of error in the predictions from the National Hurricane Center. Southern Nova Scotia is among the areas that could be affected.

Safety Precautions for Hurricane Lee

According to the reports, there is a possibility of hurricane conditions in parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, along with tropical storm conditions and coastal flooding along the New England coast. These conditions could lead to downed trees and power outages. Heavy rainfall from Lee may also result in localized flooding in eastern Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.

Sources indicated that one threat posed by Hurricane Lee is the creation of life-threatening surf and rip currents along the entire coast. These rip currents are narrow, fast-moving currents that can sweep swimmers away from the shore. It’s important to distinguish them from riptides or undertows, as rip currents flow outward, not under the surface.

Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions as Hurricane Lee approaches.
