Police Commissioner Resigns Amid Gilgo Beach Serial Killings Case

According to local media, a New York police commissioner who assisted in the prosecution of an alleged Long Island serial murderer unexpectedly declared his intention to leave on Thursday.

According to ABC 7 New York, Rodney Harrison, the 54-year-old police commissioner of Suffolk County, indicated in an internal message that he will tell the county’s top executive of his plan to quit on Friday.

Since New Year’s Eve 2021, Harrison has managed the Suffolk County Police Department, becoming the county’s first Black police commissioner. He had previously served as the New York Police Department’s head of department and chief of detectives.

His biggest achievement as Suffolk County Police Chief was assisting the agency in the capture of a suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killings, a sequence of 11 homicides that occurred between 1996 and 2011 and remained a cold case until the arrest of Rex Heuermann in July 2023.

His intention to resign was said to have caught the department off surprise. According to the New York Post, it came as a surprise.

It’s unclear why Harrison decided to stand down from his position.
