According to her family, an adolescent in Virginia was killed by her ex-boyfriend in what seems to be a murder-suicide.
In a news release on Wednesday, the Blacksburg, Virginia, Police Department stated that it had found a firearm inside a car in a parking garage, along with two murdered youths. Officials withheld the names of the two deceased, who were both Blacksburg High School students.
Serenity Hawley, 17, was named by her family, in an interview with WSLS-TV, as the victim of the murder-suicide. Serenity was shot in the chest by her ex-boyfriend, according to Hawley’s family.
“She was a great kid. I mean I couldn’t have asked for a better child,” her dad, John Hawley told the outlet.
Serenity’s parents say that she turned eighteen in a few days and was admitted to Virginia Tech recently.
Serenity’s mother, Heather Waldron, stated that her 17-year-old daughter was involved in an altercation approximately a month ago with her ex-boyfriend, which led to the school issuing a no-contact order.
Waldron told the publication that although she attempted to encourage her daughter to obtain a restraining order, it was not ultimately granted.
“The biggest thing is to watch for red flags. Don’t ignore or think that this wouldn’t happen to your daughter because I would never in a million years thought this would happen to my daughter,” said Waldron. “She was just very vivacious. She was just larger than life. And to know that she is gone is just unreal.”
