Man found dead in street in Birmingham neighborhood

Just before 3 a.m. on Saturday, West Precinct officers responded to a Shot Spotter alert of gunfire at Avenue W and 18th Street in Ensley. Upon arrival, they discovered a man lying wounded and unresponsive in the roadway. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at the scene.

Sgt. LaQuitta Wade stated that Shot Spotter registered approximately nine rounds. Authorities have not yet been able to identify the victim, and no witnesses have come forward to report seeing the shooting.

“Details are limited,” Wade said.

This marks Birmingham’s 119th confirmed homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency, and eight others have been ruled justifiable.

Including the 119 in Birmingham, there have been 165 homicides in Jefferson County.
