Fox News Digital reported that a 19-year-old male was taken into custody and charged with the gruesome triple stabbing death of his father, dad’s girlfriend, and his five-year-old sibling in the Bronx.
The NYPD confirmed on Thursday to Fox News Digital that Jayden Rivera, a 19-year-old college student, was taken into custody and charged on Wednesday night in connection with the fatalities. He is accused of manslaughter, murder with several victims, intent to murder, and illegal possession of a firearm.
When police arrived at an apartment in Mott Haven, the Bronx, on Sunday morning, they discovered that Kayden Rivera, the couple’s five-year-old son, and 38-year-old Jonathan Rivera, along with 33-year-old Hanoi Peralta, were all suffering from stab wounds. Before EMS pronounced the family members dead on the spot, according to police, each was unconscious and unresponsive.
Soon after the devastating finding, there was growing conjecture that Rivera’s teenage son was responsible for the killings. Early this week, the New York Post revealed that the son, who goes to college upstate, had put himself into Westchester County Medical Centre soon after the killings.
At this week’s news conference, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny disclosed that Jayden Rivera had told hospital medical workers he “did something bad and that he had killed somebody.”
According to Kenny, detectives have discovered that the son told his mother that he “heard voices” before the stabbings, which progressed to his thinking that his father and his father’s girlfriend “were going to hurt him.”
“Later on, when he returned home, he stated to his mother again that he was hearing voices and that he thought that Mr. Rivera and Ms. Peralta were going to hurt him,” Kenny said, according to the New York Post.
According to the police, on Saturday night and into Sunday morning, residents of the Mott Haven apartment block heard a guy yelling Our Father in Spanish in the hallways, and at around two in the morning on Sunday, they heard a man and a woman screaming.
Jonathan Rivera was discovered in the apartment building’s corridor, suffering from stab wounds to his torso, according to the police’s first statement. According to the Post, Peralta was discovered in the bedroom of the couple’s residence, while toddler Kayden Rivera was discovered on an inflatable mattress with eight stab wounds on his torso and one wound to his chest. According to Kenny, the five-year-old was practically “disembowelled” during the horrific acts of abuse.
According to Kenny, police discovered a dented pot and a tiny kitchen knife there.
“It appears that after they were stabbed, the victims were beaten with [a] pot to the point that it was dented,” he said.
Following the killings, the suspect walked up to his mother’s flat in the Bronx, where she contacted 911 and was subsequently transported to the hospital.
Friends and family of the family are left wondering unanswered questions in the wake of the shocking stabbings. Miguel Rivera, the father of Jonathan Rivera, told the New York Post that his son never showed preference among his four children and that there were no indications the 19-year-old would harm his own family in this way.
“I don’t see never like a jealous thing in Jayden,” he told the outlet on Tuesday. “I never seen Jonathan take one side to the other one. No, no, no. Never. Nobody takes a side.
“Last year we were here for Thanksgiving and Jayden was here and he was playing.”
The grandfather said his “heart is broken for my baby, my youngest grandson.”
Hours before they were killed, the pair had gone on a “paint and sip” date, according to Eusebio Baez, a family friend, who spoke with the outlet. According to the Post, Jayden Rivera even looked after his five-year-old half-brother while the couple went on their final date.
“The night before, I spoke to him. He was at a paint and sip with his girlfriend … They posted on social media having a good time,” Baez, who knew Jonathan Rivera for 20 years before his killing, told the Post.
“He was showing everyone, ‘Look how much better her painting is than mine.’ They were both happy.”
According to Baez, his old buddy had a “golden heart” and “sacrificed everything for his kids.”
