Before he could board an aircraft for the first leg of an international journey, Humzah Mashkoor, 18, was arrested at Denver International Airport, according to a news statement from the Department of Justice.

Officials said that Mashkoor was scheduled to travel to the United Arab Emirates, where he intended to remain until he could travel to either Afghanistan or Syria to “serve as a fighter for ISIS.”

Mashkoor, a resident of Westminster, Colorado, was accused of trying to give material assistance to an organisation that has been classified as a foreign terrorist organisation.

On Monday, the 18-year-old appeared in court for the first time.

The Denver Field Office of the FBI is looking into this.
