James Donnelly was taken into custody on December 23. The San Bernardino Police Department clarified in a Facebook statement that officers were sent to a victim’s home following their discovery of the alleged sexual abuse.

Authorities eventually located two other victims who claimed they had been sexually molested by Donnelly after speaking with the first victim.

“After further investigation, two more victims, both male and female, were discovered and reported crimes against James Donnelly that spanned over seven years,” police said in a release. “The victims were approximately ten years old when the sexual abuse started.”

Police detained Donnelly just before Christmas while he was preparing for a New Year’s Eve celebration, following nearly two months of investigation.

“On December 23, 2023, Donnelly was located and arrested at a local Southern California Fair Ground setting up for a New Year’s Eve festival,” the police’s statement continued. “Donnelly has worked for travelling carnivals for the past 30 years.”

In addition to California, the carnivals were held in Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. According to the authorities, the suspect targeted youngsters while living at the houses of women who dated and had children.

“Throughout the years, Donnelly met women who lived near the carnivals and would stay short or long-term,” police said. “The relationship he built with these women allowed him to have access to children who he would sexually assault.”

Police in San Bernardino are looking for more victims right now.
