Just before 9:30 p.m., according to the San Francisco Police Department, a group of ten to fifteen persons approached the completely autonomous car between Stockton and Grant.

The group vandalised the car, breaking windows and hurling a rocket inside. The car caught fire as the firecracker caught fire.

According to a Waymo representative, there were no passengers in the car and no injuries were recorded.

What spurred the mob to damage the car is still unknown. As of Sunday, no arrests had been made.

According to a representative for Waymo, the Mountain View, California-based business is coordinating with regional law enforcement to address the matter.

Residents were warned by the San Francisco police on Sunday that it is illegal to use fireworks in the city because “they cause death, injury, and property damage.”

The San Francisco Police Department has been contacted by the media to obtain further details.
