Cyber attacks against key US infrastructure continue, but this time its China

Chinese military has been alleged by government officials for targeting a number of water and power installations across the country, they got suspected by the recent Iranian cyberattack against a US water treatment facility.

If war break out between US and China, transportation systems would be the apparent target to get deployed. Crippling key infrastructure after an outbreak of hostilities would slow logistics, create potential hysteria within population centers, and ultimately destabilise the nation.

Five Eyes on China

The groups affiliated with the People’s Liberation Army had carried out the attacks and also the group have infiltrated twenty to thirty sites across the country.

Water infrastructure in Hawaii were one among the targets, the operator of the Texas power grid, a port on the West Coast, and at least one oil and gas pipeline. The attacks against these sites are very serious still there is no control systems organised.

The group of China’s People’s Liberation Army has been referenced in a number of attacks including this one as reported by the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), they have also being named in some warnings released by Microsoft researchers and the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.

The executive director of CISA named Brandon Wales said in a statement that ,”It is very clear that Chinese attempts to compromise critical infrastructure are in part to pre-position themselves to be able to disrupt or destroy that critical infrastructure in the event of a conflict in order to prevent US from being able to project power into Asia or to cause societal chaos inside US- to affect our decision-making around a crisis”.
