Following an early-morning gunshot close to Virginia State University that left a campus police officer critically injured, authorities say there is still one suspect at large.

According to Chesterfield County police, the shooting occurred at 1:30 a.m. when a VSU police officer who was on duty responded to a disturbance at the Petersburg, Virginia, campus.

The perpetrator shot the campus officer, critically injuring him, and then fled the scene, according to the police.

The institution claims that after the shooting, the campus was placed under lockdown, but the lockdown has already been lifted.

Chesterfield County Police Chief Jeffrey Katz is urging the suspect to turn himself in while the shooting investigation is still ongoing.

“CCPD stands in unwavering solidarity with our partners at Virginia State University. We will not rest until the individual who shot the officer is brought to justice,” Katz said in a statement on Facebook.
