Because he is illiterate in English, Jinhuan Chen,59, claimed before a state judge in Bridgeport, Connecticut, that he was unaware the candies were tainted with the drug.

Mr. Chen feels lucky that nobody was hurt, according to his lawyer Daniel Esposito.

“I didn’t know it was marijuana,” Chen previously told the court through a Mandarin translator. “I didn’t know.”

Chen has been a bus driver for Go Go Sun Tours in Boston for ten years.

After he pulled his bus over on the side of Interstate 95 in Stratford on March 13 and passed out in the driver’s seat with 38 passengers inside, he was taken into custody.

Chen had a bag of Smokies Edibles Cannabis Infused Fruit Chews with him when the police found him.

The 38 charges of reckless endangerment will be removed from his record after he serves out the two-year probationary period that has been mandated.

“This potentially could have had devastating consequences, but he immediately pulled over and called 911,” Judge Elizabeth Reid said.

Victor Chen, the manager of Go Go Sun Tour, attested to the character of his long-term worker, stating that he was simply addicted to sweets and had no history of substance misuse.

“He doesn’t drink, he doesn’t smoke, but he has a sweet tooth and likes candy,” Chen said.

He added, “This would never have happened a couple of years ago, but now there’s marijuana everywhere here.”
